Are the trunks worthy?

Could David Corenswet’s Superman have worked without the trunks? Recent concept art reveals how his suit almost looked in the recent reboot!

One of the biggest debates leading up to the release of Superman was whether or not the character should wear his iconic red trunks. Some argued that they were a core aspect of his character, while others said that they were antiquated and silly in the modern era. While the suit did ultimately add the trunks (in no small part due to the advocation of David Corenswet himself), fans were left wondering what the costume could have looked like without them.

The answer actually came in a recently released piece of concept art. Maybelle Pineda, who worked in the costume department for Superman, recently took to social media to share some behind-the-scenes images from production. In the carousel, the designer slipped in a piece of concept art revealing what David Corenswet’s suit could have looked like without the trunks.

The Future Of David Corenswet’s Superman Suit

While fans absolutely adored the suit David Corenswet wore in Superman, trunks and are, it’ll likely be far from the only suit he wears in the DC Universe. Superhero movies tend to give their actors new costumes every film. And given how many iconic looks the Man of Steel has had, there’s no guarantee that the trunks will even last to the concept art made for his next appearance.

One suit fans are hoping David Corenswet eventually dons is the Kingdom Come suit. Even though that version of the suit does keep the trunks, it darkens the colors and adds black behind the emblem to make Superman seem older and more mature. Given Corenswet’s logo already resembles the Kingdom Come suit, it may be more likely than not that he wears a variation of that costume in future DC Universe projects.
