Was Superman only able to draw big crowds at the box office? The first reports for the film’s digital release paint an interesting picture for the DC Universe film.
While some may hate to say it, it’s undeniable that Superman absolutely killed it at the box office. The film wasn’t able to reach the international numbers of the DC Universe’s hay day (though, in fairness, not even the biggest box office successes of this year have), but it greatly overperformed at the international box office, and reports suggest it made a pretty cool profit.
But the real test of a film’s mettle doesn’t come at the box office, but digital platforms. For as much as some hate to say it, digital is where kings are made in the modern movie space. While that may not seem like a lot for folks who don’t pay attention to the digital box office, it’s important to note that the digital version of Superman cost a whopping $30. It’s no small price tag, with Warner Bros. Discovery splitting a cool $15 million for the project with its streaming partners. Though this number is likely much higher now, with Samba remarking that the film has been purchased over a million times since its release on August 15th.
