Is Earth-3 the true “big bad” of the DC Universe? James Gunn suggests that he has plans for Ultraman to return in a future project for the franchise.
There’s a lot of open-ended questions about what the future holds for the DC Universe. However, perhaps none is more prominent than when and how Ultraman will return. Despite being dropped into a black hole at the end of Superman, almost everyone can agree that James Gunn has more ideas in store for the clone of the Man of Tomorrow.
Those theories have often revolved around the Ultraman becoming Bizarro or the Overman of Earth-X. However, the true answer may have been hiding in the character’s namesake. When speaking on the Superman director’s commentary, James Gunn points out that the character shares his name with a villain from Earth-3. He also teased that fans don’t know where Ultraman ended up right after this, teasing some kind of tie between the two concepts. (Source: ComicBookMovie.com)
We discover that Ultraman is a clone of Superman. [In the comics], Ultraman is from Earth-3, where he’s a part of The Crime Syndicate and an evil version of Superman. There are some similarities here. Also, you might ask yourself, ‘Where does Ultraman go at the end of the movie?’ He sends him up into the black hole. Is this the end of Ultraman? I don’t know.”
Will Ultraman Return On Earth-3?
The idea of Ultraman ended up on Earth-3, an evil Earth ran by the Crime Syndicate, may perk the ears of some avid DC Universe fans. For those watching Peacemaker, it has become clear that James Gunn is hiding some dark secret about the alternate Earth the 11th Street Kids have found themselves on. Is it possible that the series is setting up Ultraman to return on that evil Earth as the primary villain for the franchise’s first arc.
Having Ultraman return as one of the biggest “heroes” of Earth-3 would actually line up with comments James Gunn has made about a big cameo at the end of Peacemaker season 2. While many expect it to be Ultraman, it would be just as interesting to see David Corenswet to reprise his role in a much more villainous capacity.
