Will Superman finally face off against Brainiac? The latest featurette for the film suggests that James Gunn may have big plans for the project’s sequel.
Brainiac is a character that is sure to bring pain to any DC fan’s heart. The character is one of the biggest Superman villains in history, appearing in multiple video games, animated shows, and even card games. Despite this, it seems as though the character is always just on the cusp of happening in live-action, before being ripped away due to circumstances outside of creatives’ control.
Many hoped that Brainiac would be the leading villain in James Gunn’s Superman reboot. And while that didn’t come to pass, it seems as though the character may be on the top of the director’s mind. The latest featurette released for the film seems to show off concept art for the sequel, with a very familiar Coulan appearing in the corner of the frame.
Well… that’s interesting.

Is Brainiac In The Superman Sequel?
It’s important to note that there’s nothing completely confirming this art as pre-vis material for a Superman sequel. However, it is well-known that James Gunn likes to visualize his films before and during the writing of the script. The featurette also teases that the director took big inspirations from the Super-Family comics, suggesting that they may be the focus of the Superman follow-up he’s writing that isn’t officially a sequel.
If this teaser in the featurette means anything, it’ll likely be confirmed this October at New York Comic-Con. James Gunn has made that convention the key location for all big DC Universe announcements. And, given there’s no DC films set to enter production after January 2026 (assuming Sgt. Rock doesn’t take the summer slot), it’s likely Gunn would reveal the Superman “sequel” to film in Spring with Brainiac as the main villain.
