‘Superman’ Reboot Finalist Tom Brittney Reveals He Accidentally Tore Henry Cavill’s Suit During DC Universe Audition

Was Tom Brittney too big to play Superman?

Henry Cavill’s Superman suit was a bit too snug! Tom Brittney recalls a funny story when auditioning to play the Man of Steel in the DC Universe reboot.

Even though the DC Universe has yet to even officially kick off, fans have wholeheartedly embraced David Corenswet as the new Superman. However, it wasn’t long ago that the search for the new Man of Steel was happening in full force, with almost nobody sure of who could take the mantle from Henry Cavill in the highly-anticipated reboot by James Gunn.

A lot of names were being tossed around about who could be a good replacement for Henry Cavill. While fans advocated for popular fancasts like Jacob Elordi to take on the role of the Man of Steel, the search for Superman seemed to come down to three finalists: David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, and Tom Brittney. While both Corenset and Hoult would ultimately land roles in the DC Universe, it seems Britney may have been too big for the reboot.

Tom Brittney Ripped Henry Cavill’s Superman Suit

It’s very common for Superman actors to screen test for the role wearing the suit of the last actor to play the Man of Steel. For the DC Universe reboot, this meant that David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult and Tom Brittney had to wear one of Henry Cavill’s hold costume. While reflecting on this experience, Brittney revealed that he accidentally ripped the suit while auditioning due to his size.

“It was actually Henry Cavill’s Superman suit,” Brittney explained on the Hellish podcast. “It was his actual suit. It takes about half an hour to get into it – to get sewn into it. And yeah, I think I might have accidentally ripped it. I was more muscular than Henry Cavill, that’s the only reason.”

For clarity, it’s not likely Tom Brittney nor anyone else auditioning for the role of Superman wore Henry Cavill’s original suit from Man of Steel. Rather, just a suit they had lying around with no use heading into a new reboot. Regardless, it’s certainly a funny story to hear that the size of the people auditioning were too big for even tailors to fight them into suits from the old DC Universe, suggesting a truly imposing physicality for David Corenswet in the upcoming film.

Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
