Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi has admitted that he lied to Marvel in order to get his foot in the door to direct the film.

Alongside James Gunn, Ryan Coogler, and The Russo Brothers, Taika Waititi has quickly proven himself to be one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s best and most interesting directors. With an almost perfect mixture of hilarious humor, fun action, and a serving of heartfelt drama, Thor: Ragnarok quickly became hailed as one of the better MCU sequels. The film has also opened many new opportunities for the director that he might not have had otherwise.

As of this writing, Taika Waititi has directed an episode of The Mandalorian, won an Oscar for the film Jo Jo Rabbit and is set to write and direct his own Star Wars film. He is also working on another Marvel film, titled Thor: Love and Thunder which is set to be released later this year. Yet, before he did all of this, the director had to bend the truth to get his foot in the door.

While appearing on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Taika Waititi admitted that he fibbed a bit when he met with Marvel. Specifically, he notes that if you want a job in something like the MCU you have to say yes to everything they ask, even if it’s not entirely true:

“Say yes to everything. Absolutely, I can do that. I won’t let you down. you know. If you want a job, you’ve got to lie. You’ve got to fake it.”
