Thor helmer Taika Waititi will direct and co-write a brand new Star Wars film for Disney, with Krysty Wilson-Cairns co-writing the film’s script.

While fans have been eagerly awaiting news about the future of the galaxy following The Rise of Skywalker‘s release, Disney has announced that Thor director Taika Waititi will be helming the next film in the franchise. It’s obviously appropriate that the news arrived on May 4, also known as Star Wars day. Although little is known about the film, it’s clear that Disney is eyeing up unique creative talent to herald the next era in a galaxy far, far away.

The announcement revealed that Taika Waititi will also co-write the film and is joined by Krysty Wilson-Cairns on scribe duties. Scottish screenwriter Wilson-Cairns was nominated for an Academy Award for co-writing 1917 with Sam Mendes. The announcement also confirmed that Russian Doll co-creator will write and produce a new series for Disney Plus.
