Ryan Reynolds and Taika Waititi are still roasting the poorly-received Green Lantern.
Comedians Ryan Reynolds and Taika Waititi are set to grace the silver screen in Free Guy, which they’ve adamantly maintained will be their first on-screen appearance together. The duo first appeared together in Green Lantern, a commercial and critical failure, but they’re trying to forget about that. In a recent interview with Total Film magazine, both stars sat down to promote their upcoming action-comedy film and mock Green Lantern.
When asked by the outlet if Free Guy will wipe away all the bad will that the duo brought to the screen with Green Lantern, Taika Waititi responded by saying he has no idea what movie they’re talking about.
“What’s the project you’re talking about? I’ve never heard of it, Green… what?”
The Thor: Ragnarok writer and director continued by discussing just how fun it is to be able to make fun of yourself, as well as your previous efforts that became blunders.
“No, that type of thing is great, because Ryan and I have both got a similar sense of humour in regards to things like that, I find it really funny that I did that film. The thing is, it’s like when people shy away from things, and they don’t want to admit they’ve done something, or they don’t ever reference it, I find it worse. If an actor is brave enough or comfortable enough in themselves to acknowledge it, and to be self-deprecating, and to own that they have been a part of something that’s been lambasted a bit, then I think that’s great. Because when you can make fun of yourself, then everybody else understands: ‘Oh, we’re all in on the joke’. Because if you pretend it never happened, then it makes it kind of weird and uncomfortable for everyone. [Pauses] I still don’t have any idea what that project is. I’m not entirely sure which one you’re talking about.”
Waititi seems to have the right attitude as he’s right: none of us have forgotten how much of a disappointment Green Lantern was. One of the redeeming qualities of the film, in hindsight, has been the actor’s continual depreciation directed at the film. For example, after Waititi’s long-winded answer, Ryan Reynolds continued to front his cluelessness.
“I’ve never met him,”
In recent memory, Green Lantern has been the frequent butt of jokes whenever it comes to making fun of superhero movies and how they’re not always a surefire success. Lucky for us, both stars from the film are willing to move on, without necessarily forgetting their failures.
