Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi discusses why Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie is dissatisfied with her role as the leader of Asgard.
Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie was first introduced in Taika Waititi’s previous Marvel film, Thor: Ragnarok. A member of Asgardian warriors known as the Valkyrie, she saw all of her comrades slaughtered by Hella and is the last of her order. Eventually, Thor was able to persuade her to come out of hiding and join him in his battle against Hella.
Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie was notably absent from Avengers: Infinity War but returned for Avengers: Endgame. At the end of the film, Thor declared her the King of Asgard while he joined the Guardians of the Galaxy to find himself. However, it’s pretty clear that she isn’t happy in the role.
In the first trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder, we saw just one small bit of Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie but it told a lot. She was in a meeting with several other people looking absolutely bored with everything that was going on. While speaking to Fandango, Taika Waititi opened up about the character and explained that she was a warrior who was stuck in a bureaucrat position and missed the battlefield:
“She’s got all the responsibilities of basically running a town and looking after her people. Where we find her is also missing the battlefield. She spent her entire life as a career soldier and part of the Valkyrie, and now she’s kind of got an admin job and she’s got a lot of meetings”

Here is the synopsis for Thor: Love and Thunder:
The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, and Russell Crowe.
