Taika Waititi addressed the rumor claiming he’s in talks to direct a Star Wars film.

In addition to portraying the bounty hunter droid IG-11 on Disney Plus’ The Mandalorian, Taika Waititi directed the acclaimed season one finale of the Star Wars series. With one Star Wars project under his belt, rumors have been circulating claiming Taika Waititi is in talks to direct a feature film entry in the franchise.

During an interview with Variety, Taika Waititi addressed the Star Wars rumors when asked where his status in franchise stands. However, Taika Waititi indicated that the only discussions he’s had about Star Wars involved how much he loves the franchise with friends:

“I wish there was a better story, I’ll put it that way. Are there discussions about the “Star Wars” film? Like, yeah, I discussed with my friends in 1996 how cool “Star Wars” was. That’s what they’re going off.”

When asked he meant there were no official conversations regarding his future with the Star Wars franchise, Taika Waititi noted that he would love to helm a film in the series but added people are assuming he’s in talks to do just because he’s seen with people involved in the saga.

“I think people see me hanging out with people, especially with “Star Wars,” and think I’m having some big discussions about it. I would f—ing love to.”

Nonetheless, Taika Waiti noted that he would love to direct any project, including a Star Wars film if it made sense to him:

“If it was right. I would want to do any kind of movie if it made sense, and if it felt not like career suicide.”
