‘Thor: Love And Thunder’ Director Taika Waititi Plays Coy On Returning To The Franchise

Will Marvel complete the Taika trilogy?

Taika Waititi recently refused to give a definitive answer when asked whether he might return to direct a third Thor film after the upcoming Love and Thunder.

Thor: Love and Thunder is the fourth film in Marvel’s Thor series and marks Taika Waititi’s second time in the director’s seat for the franchise. He also directed the series’ previous entry, Thor: Ragnarok, which took Thor’s story in a livelier and more comedic direction, breathing fresh life into what was one of Marvel’s more lacklustre properties.

Ragnarok proved successful enough to land Taika Waititi a second Thor gig, making Thor the only Avenger so far to get four solo movies. It raises the question of whether the director might be tempted back again for Thor 5.

Taika Waititi’s Own ‘Thor’ Trilogy?

Speaking to Fandango All Access in a recent interview, Taika Waititi was asked about whether he had thought of his Thor movies as parts of a trilogy with a third and final entry still to come. The director, who is surely well-versed in Marvel’s spoiler prevention handbook by now, admitted he hadn’t thought of the films as part of a trilogy, but refused to get any more specific than that:

“I haven’t thought about it as part of a new trilogy, because every time I make a film, I think, ‘I’m never doing that again…’ because they’re just too hard. That’s any film. I’ve done it eight times now. Eight times I’ve said, ‘I think I’m just going to pack it in. I had a good run.’ And then sure enough get lured back in with a Yankee dollar. Lured back in by them cookies… and them Oscars.”

If Thor: Ragnarok is any indication, fans would be surely be happy to see Taika Waititi return to the world of Thor for a third outing. Whether or not he does may well depend on audiences’ and critics’ response to Thor: Love and Thunder, which releases next month.

Here is the synopsis for Thor: Love and Thunder:

The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, and Russell Crowe.
