Director Terry Gilliam says that he “hated” Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther and disliked the attention the Marvel Studios film received from the media.

The conversation about Marvel Studios’ domination over the box office has only just subsided after Martin Scorsese’s comments made the headlines, and director Terry Gilliam is the latest filmmaker to criticize superhero genre by stating he “hated” Black Panther. In 2017, director Terry Gilliam finally managed to get The Man Who Killed Don Quixote off the ground after 30 years of attempting to get the film made, with Adam Driver starring alongside Jonathan Pryce.

But the legendary director recently took shots at Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther in an interview with IndieWire. Terry Gilliam claims that Ryan Coogler and the crew behind the film never went to Africa before also mentioning how much he hated the media attention surrounding the film. The director dismissed the importance of the film by suggesting the crew just got a stylist for “some African pattern fabrics.” Take a look at director Terry Gilliam criticizing Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther below.

“I hated ‘Black Panther.’ It makes me crazy. It gives young black kids the idea that this is something to believe in. Bullshit. It’s utter bullshit. I think the people who made it have never been to Africa. They went and got some stylist for some African pattern fabrics and things. But I just, I hated that movie, partly because the media were going on about the importance of bullshit.”

What do you think about Terry Gilliam’s comments about Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther? Do you think Black Panther is more culturally relevant than the director says? Sound off in the comments below!
