Tessa Thompson reprises the role of Valkyrie in Thor: Love and Thunder and has recently discussed a potential solo spinoff for her character in the MCU.
Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie was first introduced in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, as the last of Asgard’s elite female warriors. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, she is King of New Asgard by the time Thor: Love and Thunder starts.
Thor: Love and Thunder quickly makes it clear the Valkyrie misses her old warrior ways while stuck amidst the bureaucracy of leadership. Could she be getting back into action in a solo movie?
Valkyrie Rides Again
Tessa Thompson was asked about the possibility of a Valkyrie spinoff during an interview with Extra. While the actress admitted she didn’t know if such a project was currently in the works at Marvel, she did reveal she would be very open to the idea.
Valkyrie has proven herself a more than capable hero throughout her MCU appearances so far, in both the Thor and Avengers franchises. Given the rich warrior history of Asgard’s Valkyries, which was touched upon in Ragnarok, there’s plenty to explore with the character too.
Here’s what Tessa Thompson had to say when asked about a spinoff for Valkyrie:
Extra: “Are we gonna see a Valkyrie spin-off maybe? Get your own deal going? What do you think?”
Thompson: “(laughs) I don’t know.”
Extra: “Would that be something you’re open to though?”
Thompson: “’I love playing the character so any chance I get to play her in any form, I’m happy to.”
Thor: Love and Thunder once again sees Valkyrie proving her mettle against one of the MCU’s most terrifying villains to date, in Christian Bale’s Gorr. As Tessa Thompson would clearly be open to the possibility, maybe it is time the character got her own Marvel franchise.
Here is the synopsis for the film:
The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the Thor solo film stars Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Taika Waititi, Russell Crowe, Natalie Portman, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.
