Is The Authority actually cancelled? James Gunn gives fans an update on the long-awaited project set in the DC Universe.
When James Gunn first announced the slate for the new DC Universe, one of the projects that stood out the most was The Authority. This wasn’t just because they’re relative unknowns, but also because they’re one of the most controversial teams in the franchise’s wide catalogue. From cancelled runs to Mark Millar’s R-Rated romp on the characters, fans were curious just how much the film could get away with on the silver screen- and if it’d even be any good.
However, as the slate of the DC Universe has progressed, The Authority was left without any update from James Gunn. This left many to worry that the project may end up getting cancelled. These fears were heightened when Gunn told Collider that the original writer he had attached to The Authority had actually left for another project, seemingly leaving the film in a limbo.
Is The Authority Actually Cancelled?
James Gunn gave fans their first true update on The Authority in a while when speaking to the outlet BlavityTV. When asked if the project could come to life, Gunn said that it “could” still materialize on the slate. However, his lack of confidence seems to suggest that there are no current plans to adapt The Authority on the silver screen.
“We could for sure, it could happen. It’s not something that’s going especially quickly right now but it could happen, for sure.”
Of course, it’s not likely that James Gunn will outright say The Authority is cancelled until a few months go by with absolutely no progress. However, given his emphasis that every DC Universe movie needs to have a strong script, it isn’t looking particularly likely that the film will find its way out of this purgatory without a writer that’s truly passionate about the Wildstorm team.
