HBO Max’s The Batman spin-off series is a prequel to Robert Pattinson’s first cinematic solo outing as the Dark Knight.

The Batman director Matt Reeves and Terence Winter (Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos) are developing a series about the Gotham City police department, with the latter writing and executive producing the project for the WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max. The upcoming series, which has a series commitment from the streamer, is set in the same world as The Batman, but it’s unclear if it will feature Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight or Jeffrey Wright’s Jim Gordon.

While plot details on HBO Max’s The Batman spin-off are scarce, Variety’s Justin Kroll reports that the project is a prequel to the Matt Reeves movie starring Robert Pattinson, focusing on “how Gotham became corrupt and infested with criminals.” You can check out what Kroll had to say about the series below.

Warner Bros. Television and The Batman producer Dylan Clark are also involved with the HBO Max project, which is currently untitled. Some have been calling it “Gotham Central,” a reference to the comic book series of the same name by Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka.

Plot details for The Batman are under wraps but the project will be centered on Robert Pattinson as a younger Bruce Wayne, chronicling Batman during his formative years as Gotham City’s protector. The Batman will also feature the hero making use of his detective skills more than what we’ve seen before in previous iterations of the character. The film is also expected to be the first installment to a new trilogy with Pattinson as Batman.

Directed by Matt Reeves from a script he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin, the film stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.

The Batman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news regarding Robert Pattinson’s The Batman and the HBO Max series, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more video content!
