The Batman director Matt Reeves has officially confirmed that Andy Serkis will portray Alfred Pennyworth in the upcoming film.

Matt Reeves took to his official Twitter profile to confirm Andy Serkis’ casting as Alfred Pennyworth by tweeting a gif of the acclaimed actor running through a red carpet eagerly giving fans high-fives. Matt Reeves has used gifs on Twitter to confirm the castings of The Batman as of late.

Both Matt Reeves and Andy Serkis worked together on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes. Both films received critical acclaim for both Matt Reeves’ direction as well as Andy Serkis’ remarkable portrayal as Caesar.

Known primarily for his work as perhaps the most accomplished motion-capture actor in the industry, Andy Serkis is now the latest actor to be part of both the Marvel Universe and the DC Universe. Now that he’s signed on as Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne’s loyal and wise butler, we will get a chance to see him in another role that doesn’t require digital makeup but rather his own likeness and impeccable skills as an actor.

Full plot details for The Batman are currently under wraps, though the film will center around a younger Bruce Wayne and features a Rogues’ Gallery of villains that includes Catwoman, The Penguin, and The Riddler. The Matt Reeves film will follow Batman during his formative years as Gotham City’s protector and will make use of the Dark Knight’s detective skills to a greater extent than previous DC films. It is expected to be the first chapter in a new trilogy with Robert Pattinson as Batman.

Directed by Matt Reeves from a script he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Jayme Lawson as Bella. Recently, Colin Farrell was reportedly in talks to play the Penguin.
