Longtime DC writer Scott Snyder has reacted to Robert Pattinson’s The Batman using elements from his run on the book in the film.
Scott Snyder is perhaps best known in the comic book world for his run on Batman during DC Comic’s New 52 imprint. While the imprint itself was extremely controversial, most people acknowledge that his and artist Greg Capullo’s run on it was a diamond in the rough. His most lasting contribution to it seems to have been the Court of Owls but other elements of the film have made their way to the live-action adaptations as well.
Spoiler Alert For Robert Pattinson’s The Batman
The Batman is a film that takes inspiration from a number of Batman storylines including but not limited to The Long Halloween and Year One. Another key inspiration for the film, however, seems to be Scott Snyder’s Zero Year which effectively told the New 52 Batman origin story. The arc contained a number of supervillains but the primary antagonist was The Riddler and, like his film counterpart, left Gotham City in ruins before the book ended. However, it was one element in the film in particular that got Scott Snyder excited.
In a recent post on Substack, Scott Snyder specifically cites a particular line in the film that appeared to come straight from Zero Year that made its way to the film:
“For me, I loved that they used the last line-the last line of Zero Year is where Alfred says to Julie Madison, ‘I’m sorry, but he’s spoken for…’ And in this movie when Catwoman said, ‘I know you’re spoken for,’ I was like, ‘Oh, my heart…'”
Here is the synopsis for The Batman:
Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.
When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.
Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the titular hero, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, and Barry Keoghan as The Joker.
