The Boys Season 3 has seen Homelander, Billy Butcher and Soldier Boy drawn into a complex struggle and as things came to a head, one major Supe bit the dust.
SPOILERS FOR THE BOYS SEASON 3 FOLLOW!
The Boys flips superhero convention on its head and, while none of the series’ superheroes should really be considered heroes – with the possible exception of Starlight – Homelander is by far the worst of them all. It should come as no surprise then that he was behind Season 3’s biggest death.
Homelander has spent much of Season 3 living in fear of Soldier Boy – the Captain America analog with the ability to burn the Compound V out of Supes. However, after finding out Soldier Boy was his biological father, the already unhinged Homelander became even more erratic.
Homelander Kills Again
After Anthony Starr’s Homelander learns that the genetic donor used by Vought to create him was Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy, effectively making Soldier Boy his father, he confronts Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell). Things don’t end well for Noir.
Since Season 1 of The Boys, Homelander appears to have trusted Black Noir above other members of the Seven. However, that’s not enough to keep Black Noir safe when Homelander discovers that Noir knew about his parentage.
“The Instant White-Hot Wild,” The Boys‘ Season 3 finale, only sees one major character death and this time around it’s Black Noir who doesn’t make it out alive. After Homelander asks him if he knew about Soldier Boy, Noir confirms it. Homelander then punches through his ally’s stomach, tearing out his guts.
Black Noir’s death is painful and shocking, but most of all merciless. It is typical of Homelander – feeling no remorse, the leader of the Seven turns on his friend in a heartbeat. The moment is made all the more shocking by the fact Noir has been part of The Boys since Season 1 and recent episodes had only just started to delve into the man behind the mask.
Black Noir’s death marks Homelander’s continuing descent into insanity. With The Boys‘ twisted Superman picking off his closest allies, things can’t be looking good for his enemies in future seasons.
