The Fantastic Four is off to a rocky start! Ebon Moss-Bachrach revealed how he’s preparing to play The Thing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Ebon Moss-Bachrach playing The Thing was truly a “perfect fan cast come true” for fans of The Fantastic Four. He was the only actor on anyone’s radar to play Ben Grimm, and he ultimately landed the role. However, it seems he’s still training to play the character, though perhaps in an unorthodox way compared to other Marvel actors.
“I’m playing Ben Grimm, who becomes The Thing, who is a man encased in rock. So, yeah, I don’t know, I’ve just been looking at rocks,” Moss-Bachrach joked during a recent appearance on The Daily Show. “I’ve been reading a lot of comics. It’s really nice. They gave me this Marvel Unlimited thing, so I can just go on my iPad, and go to any comic book that Marvel’s ever released.”
The rocks joke may be a tongue-in-cheek reference to Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s co-star Joseph Quinn, who said he’d be lighting himself on fire to prepare for the role of Johnny Storm. It’s good that The Fantastic Four cast both has a sense of humor and is training by reading through their character’s comics. This project may truly shape up to be Marvel’s most impressive to date.
Ebon Moss-Bachrach Reveals His Transformation
With how perfect news about The Fantastic Four has been, some fans were hoping to hear that Ebon Moss-Bachrach would be wearing a full practical suit to transform into The Thing. However, according to the actor, Marvel said the suit was uncomfortable the last time around, meaning Ben Grimm will likely be fully CGI.
“I don’t think it’s the suit,” Moss-Bachrach explained. “Michael Chiklis wore a suit. Apparently, the suit was really uncomfortable. We’re past that I think. It’s a little cosplay and amateur now with the technology. It’s mostly performance capture.”
This may come as a disappointment to some Marvel fans. However, given how much a suit restricts an actor’s ability to emote, going the CGI route could allow Ebon Moss-Bachrach to play a truly breathtaking version of Ben Grimm in The Fantastic Four. The thing on everyone’s mind is just how The Thing actually looks!
