Did fans miss “Flame On!” in The Fantastic Four: First Steps? The film’s writer reveals the location of the Human Torch’s iconic catchphrase.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps was refreshing in more ways than one. Fans have been endlessly praising the film on social media for its dedication to comic accuracy. Everything from iconic villains, to new locales, and even tributes to the late and great Jack Kirby- it felt as though Marvel’s First Family was done perfectly right on the silver screen.
However, fans did have one complaint. For as much focus as The Thing’s “It’s Clobberin’ Time” got in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, there was another iconic line missing. Specifically, Joseph Quinn’s Human Torch seemingly neglected to say “Flame On!” anywhere in the film. A fact many see as ironic given how much his character badgered Ben Grimm about his catchphrase!

The idea that the Human Torch somehow didn’t say “Flame On!” in The Fantastic Four: First Steps spread across the internet…well…like wildfire! So much so that the film’s writer, Eric Pearson, had to step in to set the record straight. It seems as thought he iconic line did find its way in the film, most fans just missed it in the chaos.
“You did [get it],” Pearson told Comicbook.com. “From the little toy, you did. You got it. We checked the box.”
Given how iconic the line of “Flame On!” has become, both within and outside of the franchise, some fans may still be left disappointed that it was relegated to a throwaway gag. However, given how much The Fantastic Four: First Steps did in the name of comic-accuracy, especially when it came to the Human Torch, the team may deserve a bit of slack on this issue.
