When The CW’s Arrow concluded, it did so with a tease of John Diggle’s future as the Green Lantern, a cliffhanger that has finally been resolved in The Flash.
Ever since his introduction in Arrow‘s first season, fans have been speculating on the future of David Ramsey’s John Diggle. A popular theory had suggested Diggle would become the Arrowverse’s version of John Stewart, one of DC’s Green Lanterns. When Arrow concluded with its eighth season, this future seemed to be teased for the character, who was shown finding a box that had fallen to Earth and opening it to be greeted with a green glow.
While the Arrowverse has continued without its flagship series, this particular cliffhanger had never been resolved. That all changed with Episode 18 of The Flash Season 8.
Diggle Decides His Fate
The Flash episode saw Diggle travel to Lian Yu, where Eobard Thawne (Tom Cavanagh) is currently imprisoned. Diggle tracked down Thawne in search of answers on the nature of the box he discovered in the Arrow finale.
Thawne reveals that the box – simply referred to as “the cube,” the presumed Green Lantern ring never being shown – sent itself to Diggle because he was at a crossroads in his life, a point at which his fate could be decided, but closed itself because he wasn’t ready to receive its power. When Diggle says he is ready now, he looks into the box and receives a vision of his countless possible futures as the Green Lantern. This is not shown, but suggested through clips of the cosmos and voiceover segments in which Diggle echoes Oliver Queen’s dialogue from Arrow‘s first ever episode – “No-one can know my secret.”
Ultimately, Diggle closes the box and throws it away. It’s a shocking moment that may disappoint some fans who had been hoping for a series featuring the character as the Green Lantern. Diggle, however, says of all the futures he saw, “not one of them led me back to my family.” He opts to be a husband and a father rather than a Green Lantern.
