‘The Flash’ Filmmakers Clarify Sequel Plans & Tease Ben Affleck’s Batman Future

The people behind The Flash speak out!

Ben Affleck The Flash Batman

The Flash is set to debut in just a few days, featuring the final appearance of Ben Affleck as Batman. When talking about the film, director Andy Muschietti and his sister Barbara tease a potential future for Affleck’s Batman while clarifying the status of a sequel.

Rumors about a sequel to The Flash already being written have been circulating for months. Many people believe that DC is just waiting to see if the movie flops or not to greenlight the return of Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen. However, according to one of the film’s producers Barbara Muschietti, the rumor is a bit premature:

“That I think was a bit premature,” she tells Total Film. “We’re not really familiar with that draft. I think that draft has been around for a while.”

While the future of The Flash continuing with Ezra Miller appears to be up in the air, director Andy Muschietti teased the return of another hero. When asked about this film being a send-off to Ben Affleck’s version of Batman, the director teased that this may not be the end:

“How do you know it’s his last time?” Barbara asked before Andy continued, “The truth is that the multiverse allows everything to happen. As Bruce Wayne says [in The Flash], there are infinite timelines and inevitable intersections, and that’s one of the things that excited me about portraying the multiverse in this movie, is that it opens up the possibility to bring people back the moment you’d least expect. So I would like to think that it’s not a send-off, we’ll see.”

While Andy Muschietti’s comments may seem a tad hollow with The Flash sequel plans seemingly confirmed as exaggerated, his tease about Ben Affleck’s Batman returning may still hold water. James Gunn and Peter Safran have promised that the new DC Universe will put writers first. If the Muschiettis return for a new project, be it a sequel to The Flash or the fact he’s rumored to direct Batman: The Brave and the Bold, his passion may be the key to Affleck’s return.

The Flash’s DC Universe future

Warner Bros. Discovery already has a script for a potential sequel to The Flash, written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, the man behind the two Aquaman movies starring Jason Momoa. However, James Gunn and Peter Safran did not discuss the Flash sequel during their DC Universe presentation.

Directed by Andy Muschietti from a script written by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson, The Flash is inspired by the Flashpoint comic book storyline, which followed Barry Allen as he navigated an altered DC Universe. Written by Geoff Johns and penciled by Andy Kuber, Flashpoint radically altered the status of the DC Comics universe and led to the launch of the New 52 titles.

In addition to Ezra Miller, The Flash also features Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck as two separate versions of Batman, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, Maribel Verdú as Nora Allen, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Antje Traue as Faora-Ul and Sasha Calle as Supergirl. Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Rudy Mancuso and Luke Brandon Field are also on board in undisclosed roles.
