Could The Flash have been peak? Phil Lord and Chris Miller speak on their foray into the DC Universe that was cancelled before it could even begin.

The Flash was a massive flop, serving as the final nail in the coffin of the DC Universe. However, the film written by Christina Hodson and directed by Andy Muschietti wasn’t always the project fans were meant to get. The project went through many incarnations that were developed and cancelled, including a treatment by Spider-Verse writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

For those unfamiliar with the tale, Phil Lord and Chris Miller were originally tapped to helm The Flash for the DC Universe back in 2015. The duo wrote a treatment for the film before ultimately deciding to pursue developing Solo: A Star Wars story. Their script would be used as a baseline for all future writers and directors, with the two briefly considering rejoining the project in 2017. Their version of the project was likely “cancelled” shortly after, with Ezra Miller working on his own treatment for the film with Grant Morrison after creative disagreements with directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein.

Phil Lord And Chris Miller Tease Their Version Of The Flash

Phil Lord and Chris Miller have mostly been mum on The Flash ever since it was properly cancelled. However, during a recent chat with Josh Horowitz on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, the duo teased that their version of the film was actually pretty great, and that they hope to bring the project to life in the DC Universe someday.

“We had a we had a very elaborate treatment that we really like,” Miller remarked with Lord adding. “[It was] pretty different than what ended up. Yeah. I mean, I kind of want to…it’s a good idea that I am afraid to not be able to use someday.”

Given the current state of the DC Universe, it’s not clear whether or not Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s version of The Flash would be able to fit in the franchise that James Gunn is building. Though, given Warner Bros. history with cancelled projects, it would be nice to finally see one properly revived on the silver screen.

The Flash is currently streaming on Max. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe!
