The Last of Us Part II is finally out and its user reviews are getting bombed by trolls on sites like Metacritic.
While Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II is being heralded as one of the finest games of the generation by outlets, user reviews show a different side of the story. The game currently holds a fantastic 95 on Metacritic, which has been dubbed as “Universal acclaim”. The reviews, which went up last week, stated that the game boasted a brilliant narrative, realistic graphics, and brutal gameplay that resulted in a tour de force from Sony’s most coveted studio. Unfortunately, the 95 looks rather odd when showed off against the 3.5 the game has received from users.
Even prior to The Last of Us Part II’s release, trolls had been spewing negativity regarding the game because of leaks that revealed the entire narrative, causing many to be outraged. Since the leaks, many have been resentful towards the game and have been planning to review bomb the game in the hopes that its sales suffer. Unfortunately for those folks, the game has received quite the positive reception from critics and certain fans. In fact, the lead writer and director of The Last of Us Part II, Neil Druckman, took to Twitter to point out how the user reviews for the sequel doubled the first game’s.

The game takes about 30 hours to finish so it’s highly unlikely that these negative reviews are worth mulling over. While it’s fair to criticize the game, such dedicated efforts to create a stigma around a game are just nonsensical. The Last of Us Part II is still slated to be a success for Naughty Dog and Sony and review bombs like these reinforce the idea that video games aren’t a medium worthy of having a discussion over. Furthermore, developers are less likely to listen to the pleas and feedback of fans if they’re merely receiving cruel and vehement blanket statements in the form of user reviews.

The first The Last of Us video game centers on the relationship between a smuggler named Joel and 14-year-old Ellie, the latter of whom may be the key to curing the deadly pandemic that resulted in the post-apocalypse world of the game. Hired to smuggle Ellie out of a quarantine zone, Joel finds himself relying on the teenage girl just as much as she relies on him as they fight to survive on their journey across the United States.
HBO is currently developing a television adaptation that will cover the events of the first game, with the upcoming sequel titled potentially serving as the basis for additional content. Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann will pen and executive the series. The HBO adaptation will be a co-production with Sony Pictures Television and in association with PlayStation Productions. Carolyn Strauss and Naughty Dog president Evan Wells also serve as executive producers.
The Last of Us Part II is now available on PS4.
