‘The Marvels’ Alternate Ending Seemingly Killed Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel

A grim fate for Captain Marvel?

Brie Larson The Marvels

Was Brie Larson almost killed off in The Marvels? A new interview with Zawe Ashton suggests the original ending for the film may have had Captain Marvel meet a grim fate.

Like many other MCU films before it, The Marvels ended with the heroes decisively defeating the villain, killing Dar-Benn in a (literal) blaze during the film’s climax. Yet it seems that wasn’t the only ending Zawe Ashton and Brie Larson filmed together. According to the actress, Captain Marvel and Dar-Benn originally combusted together, suggesting an untimely death for Carol Danvers.

“There was another ending that we did film where Brie and myself are kind of in space still having it out, and they kind of combust together, which was really amazing,” Ashton told the Phase Zero podcast. “And that was just a day on wires hanging out with Brie, which is surreal and fun. But yeah, there were a few different plans, I think.”

“There was always going to be an epic death just because in terms of, I just think in terms of just bringing that story psychologically for Carol to a close I think was always the best thing,” She continued. “You don’t want to think, did she defeat her? Is this over? Is she going to be kind of doomed to this life of feeling guilty about this whole thing forever and ever? Or is she going get this redemptive moment where Dar-Benn’s out of the picture and then she gets to almost take on the mantle of what she was trying to do? It is a really redemptive arc for that character. I will say I did a day’s diving training because there was going to be a lot of water involved in the original death.”

While it’s unclear what exactly Zawe Ashton meant by her and Brie Larson “combusting”, it likely didn’t spell anything good for Captain Marvel’s future in the MCU. Luckily for fans, the character made it out of The Marvels unscathed. While the film was far from perfect, here’s to hoping the new ending leads to more adventures with Larson in the near future.

The talent behind The Marvels

The Marvels is set to be a groundbreaking film in many ways. Not only does it feature three powerful female superheroes, but it also has a female director, Nia DaCosta, who previously directed the horror flick Candyman. The movie features a cast that includes Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff, and Mohan Kapur.

“She has a really calm vibe, too,” Iman Vellani said about DaCosta. “These movies are not easy to make at all. There’s like a million, bajillion little moving pieces. She and [executive producer] Mary [Livanos] did such a great job to keep morale high. Even if there were days where they wanted to rip people’s heads off, they would never show it and never put their stress on anyone else.”

In addition to directing The Marvels, Nia DaCosta also co-wrote the script alongside Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik, and Zeb Wells. During an interview, DaCosta described the movie as being “full comic book madness,” teasing what audiences can expect from the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe project.
