Was The Marvels doomed from the start? Director Nia DaCosta speaks on helming the controversial sequel to Captain Marvel.

To say that The Marvels had an uphill battle was an understatement. Despite Captain Marvel making a billion dollars at the box office, a mixed fan reception to the character, online brigades, and general superhero fatigue meant a sequel was never a sure thing. Combine this with the project coming out right after the SAG strikes, leaving the stars unable to promote the film, led to it becoming one of Marvel’s biggest bombs.

Though unlike some directors who could have let a project like The Marvels spike their career into the ground like a football fresh off a touchdown, Nia DaCosta has pulled a hat-trick of good projects with Hedda, Ghost Tape, and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. The director’s success has led some to ask the question: what happened with Captain Marvel?

Nia DaCosta Breaks Silence On The Marvels

Nia DaCosta recently sat down with Deadline to talk about her experience working on the 28 Years Later sequel. Of course, the topic of The Marvels inevitably came up. When reflecting on her experience, the director revealed that it was interesting to her how much buzz there still is around the project. However, she doesn’t regret taking to make the best Captain Marvel film she could.

“It’s so interesting, because the Marvel machine had so much chatter around it. But when I look back on it, everyone tried their best. Everyone was trying to make a great film, and I will say I’m really happy to have those relationships…I look back and everyone tried their best and everyone was trying to do the right thing, and it is what it is.”

Anyone in the industry knows that no movie is ever a sure bet. Any number of factors both on set and outside of it can sink a project before it ever gets a fair shake. So while The Marvels was far from a success, it still has some fans. And it seems as though both Captain Marvel and director Nia DaCosta still have a bright future ahead of them.

The Marvels is now streaming on Disney Plus. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the future of Captain Marvel and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
