A revolutionary new story!

The official synopsis for The Marvels has finally been revealed. The newest description of the film teases how Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Photon must come together to stop a revolutionary problem in the Kree villain Dar-Benn.

The newest trailer for The Marvels caught everyone off guard when it dropped in the middle of the night, and during San Diego Comic-Con no less! While the trailer teased plenty of team-up goodness, the film’s official synopsis gives fans new insight into how Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel, became (literally) connected with her super-fan Ms. Marvel and S.A.B.E.R. agent Monica Rambeau. It also explains how Dar-Benn, a revolutionary leader from the Kree empire Carol took down in the first film, fits into this puzzle:

“Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her power become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan (aka Ms. Marvel), and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.”

An unlikely team-up story is what most fans expected when they heard Carol Danvers would be sharing the spotlight with Ms. Marvel and Photon in The Marvels. However, most fans likely believed the Kree storyline from the first film would be mostly left behind. Yet it seems the consequences from Captain Marvel will be addressed head-on in this film, with Carol forced to face a Kree soldier seeking revenge. Against a threat like Dar-Benn, she’s lucky she’s got help!

The talent behind The Marvels

The Marvels is set to be a groundbreaking film in many ways. Not only does it feature three powerful female superheroes, but it also has a female director, Nia DaCosta, who previously directed the horror flick Candyman. The movie features a cast that includes Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff, and Mohan Kapur.

“She has a really calm vibe, too,” Iman Vellani said about DaCosta. “These movies are not easy to make at all. There’s like a million, bajillion little moving pieces. She and [executive producer] Mary [Livanos] did such a great job to keep morale high. Even if there were days where they wanted to rip people’s heads off, they would never show it and never put their stress on anyone else.”

In addition to directing The Marvels, Nia DaCosta also co-wrote the script alongside Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik, and Zeb Wells. During an interview, DaCosta described the movie as being “full comic book madness,” teasing what audiences can expect from the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe project.
