The Marvels is the long-awaited sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, which is set to bring Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers face-to-face with her biggest fan Kamala Khan (a.k.a. Ms. Marvel) and S.W.O.R.D. agent Monica Rambeau. A new promotional poster for the film shows off the trio taking a stand together.
Promotional images for The Marvels have been sparse in the months leading up to its November release, especially given the film was delayed from its original July release date. Luckily for fans, this new poster gives the best look yet at Monica Rambeau, Kamala Khan, and Carol Danvers in their superhero uniforms.
While fans have seen the updated suit Kamala Khan will be sporting as Ms. Marvel in the most recent teaser and older leaked set photos, this promo provides the best full look at Monica Rambeau as Photon, a new superhero identity she’ll be taking on for The Marvels. This newest poster also has Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel positioned to the side of the group, possibly suggesting Iman Vellani will be taking center stage for much of the film.
The talent behind the Captain Marvel sequel
The Marvels is set to be a groundbreaking film in many ways. Not only does it feature three powerful female superheroes, but it also has a female director, Nia DaCosta, who previously directed the horror flick Candyman. DaCosta is the first Black woman to direct a Marvel Studios film, adding an extra layer of diversity and representation to the production.
In addition to directing The Marvels, Nia DaCosta also co-wrote the script alongside Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells. During an interview, DaCosta described the movie as being “full comic book madness,” teasing what audiences can expect from the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe project.
“In Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence,” reads an official synopsis for the movie. “But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.”
The Marvels features a cast that includes Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff and Mohan Kapur. The movie also features the return of Nick Fury, with Samuel L. Jackson reprising the role after his six-episode Disney Plus series Secret Invasion.
