Disney has released the first official trailer for The Marvels, the upcoming sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel. The Marvel Studios movie unites three powerful female superheroes — Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan.

Set to hit theaters on November 10, 2023, The Marvels features the return of Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, also known as Captain Marvel, who made her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the 2019 movie of the same name. She was last seen in the cryptic post-credits scenes of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Ms. Marvel.

Joining Brie Larson in the cast are Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, who first appeared as a child in Captain Marvel and grew up to be a powerful superhero in her own right in the Disney Plus series WandaVision, and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, a teenage superhero who was introduced in Ms. Marvel. The sneak peek offers fans a taste of what’s in store for them in the movie.

The talent behind the Captain Marvel sequel

The Marvels is set to be a groundbreaking film in many ways. Not only does it feature three powerful female superheroes, but it also has a female director, Nia DaCosta, who previously directed the horror flick Candyman. DaCosta is the first Black woman to direct a Marvel Studios film, adding an extra layer of diversity and representation to the production.

In addition to directing The Marvels, Nia DaCosta also co-wrote the script alongside Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells. During an interview, DaCosta described the movie as being “full comic book madness,” teasing the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe offering.

The Marvels features a cast that includes Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff and Mohan Kapur. The movie also features the return of Nick Fury, with Samuel L. Jackson reprising the role after his six-episode Disney Plus series Secret Invasion.
