‘The Old Guard’ Director Says Her ‘Silver & Black’ Film Was Edgy

Gina Prince-Bythewood revealed what she wanted the Sony film to look like.

The Old Guard director Gina Prince-Bythewood says Silver and Black was edgier than other Marvel films.

Former Silver and Black director Gina Prince-Bythewood says she planned to push the film harder than the rest of the Marvel universe, calling her take on Silver Sable and Black Cat “edgy”. Silver and Black was intended to be part of Sony’s collection of Spider-Man characters, but the project didn’t quite make it off the ground, even though The Old Guard Director spent over a year developing the film and preparing for production.

When speaking to IndieWire about her work on The Old Guard, Gina Prince-Bythewood opened up about Silver and Black and explained that everything she learnt when working on the Sony project helped her make the film starring Charlize Theron. She explained that Silver and Black would have been edgier than other Marvel films fans are used to seeing, but pointed out that she still got to make an “edgy superhero film with two women” thanks to The Old Guard.

“I wanted to go edgier than some of the Marvel films. It was a question of how far could I push it in that Marvel universe. ‘Silver and Black’ put me in the conversation. I was one of those couple of women people go to for these big films. I knew what kind of movies Skydance make. It was exhilarating and nerve-racking. I knew I loved this project, partly because I could do everything I wanted to do from the other film: an edgy superhero film with two women.”
