Joker: Folie à Deux just can’t catch a break! Last year’s biggest DC flop caught a stray during a viral moment from last night’s Oscars ceremony.
The stars truly seemed aligned for Joker: Folie à Deux to sweep at this year’s Oscars. The first film scored a flabbergasting eleven nominations back in 2019, taking home two wins for Joaquin Phoenix as Best Leading Actor and Best Original Score. The sequel was set to make everything bigger: bigger budgets, bigger stars, even musical numbers sung by the legendary Lady Gaga. Nobody with any skin in the game could even imagine the film flopping.
But it did flop. Hard. So hard that Joker: Folie à Deux didn’t get a single nomination at this year’s Oscars, despite a small amount of people voicing their hopes for a nod regarding its visuals. Though the film didn’t just fail at the awards show. Joker: Folie à Deux only grossed $207 million worldwide against an estimated production budget of $200 million, which isn’t to mention any marketing costs that certainly pushed the multi-millions.

Luckily, the Oscars didn’t go by without a single mention of Joker: Folie à Deux. Sadly, it’s not a mention fans of the film may have been hoping for. During a segment where host Conan O’Brien had Los Angeles firefighters read out jokes deemed “too controversial” for him to say, the film caught a stray by joking that the producers potentially lost their homes due to the film bombing so hard.

In truth, making a joke at the expense of Joker: Folie à Deux‘s box office may have been the nicest route the Oscars could have taken. There’s no shortage of jabs the awards show could have taken, from the weird musical interludes to the genuinely perplexing story decisions. However, there’s likely one clear reason that none of the intrinsic qualities of the film were the butt of the joke: Nobody writing the jokes actually watched it!
