As the Batman almost in The Sandman? Series showrunner Allan Heinberg reveals that a cameo from Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader was considered for the finale.
Despite being set in the DC Universe, The Sandman has mostly avoided the temptation to have fill itself from cameo after cameo of iconic people and places. This holds true for both the original comic and the Netflix series, who recently ended its two season run with a rather emotional finale. However, it seems there wasn’t always plans to stick to this vow.
Showrunner Allan Heinberg recently sat down with Variety to reflect on his journey with The Sandman following the finale finally hitting Netflix. During the chat, Heinberg revealed that the team behind the show briefly considered having Robert Pattinson make a cameo as Batman during the funeral of [SPOILER]. However, they ultimately decided against it.
“We talked about, ‘Does Robert Pattinson want to come to the funeral?’ Briefly, we did discuss that, but only briefly.”
Batman’s Connection To The Sandman
Surprisingly, Robert Pattinson making a cameo in the finale wouldn’t have just been a ratings stunt. Batman did truly make an appearance at the character’s funeral in the comics, meaning his appearance would have been comic-accurate. However, whether or not Pattinson would’ve shown up for the cameo if Allan Heinberg went forward with it is another story.
While Batman and The Sandman don’t have the closest ties in the comics, the characters are linked enough that a cameo of at least one of The Endless wouldn’t be out of place in the sequel to Robert Pattinson’s Batman film. However, given DC is entering a new era with their IP, it’s not likely they would want to keep any series owned by Netflix in the active canon.
