A new Walking Dead limited series focusing on Rick Grimes and Michonne was announced at San Diego Comic-Con.

The original Walking Dead series is coming to an end this fall, but AMC will keep their WalkerVerse alive with Fear the Walking Dead, Tales of the Walking Dead, Isle of the Dead, and a Daryl spin-off. A film centering around Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes was also announced and just received a major update.

“The New World Needs Rick and Michonne”

At the end of The Walking Dead Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira surprised fans by announcing a new six-episode limited series that would follow Rick Grimes and Michonnne, replacing the Grimes-led film. According to Deadline‘s Justin Kohl, the change from film to series occurred due to a recent AMC regime change. Lincoln said the following about his return as Rick:

“This has been the most extraordinary journey playing Rick Grimes for the best part of a decade. The friendships I’ve made along the way are deep and lasting, so it’s fitting that I finally get to complete the story with Danai and Scott and the rest of the TWD family. I’m so excited to be returning to the screen as Rick, reuniting with Danai as Michonne, and bringing the fans an epic love story to add to the Walking Dead Universe.”

The last we saw of Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead, he was presumed dead after blowing up a bridge, but we learned that he was taken away via helicopter. Michonne’s Walking Dead exit came a season later, setting off on a journey to look for Rick. Danai Guerra also shared her excitement for the upcoming project:

“Michonne and this TWD family has meant so much to me, and to continue the journey of these beloved characters, alongside Scott and Andy, both creatively and in front of the camera, and bringing The Walking Dead fans something truly special is just glorious. I can’t wait to pick up the katana again.”

A teaser poster for the Rick Grimes and Michonne limited series was also released, which you can check out below.

Here is the synopsis for the final episodes of The Walking Dead:

“In the upcoming final episodes of The Walking Dead, threats lurk around every corner, dead and alive, as each group continues to get caught in uncontrollable situations. The looming pressure is cresting towards a day of reckoning for all. Will the sum of their individual journeys cumulate into one, or divide them forever?”
