‘The Walking Dead’ Fan May Have Found A Plot Hole In Rick’s Last Episode

A fan of AMC’s The Walking Dead may have found a glaring plot hole that occurred in Rick Grimes’ last episode of the series.

Spoilers ahead for The Walking Dead Season 9!

In Rick’s last episode, he comes across a herd of walkers on a bridge. In an effort to evade the walkers and protect the others, he shoots at dynamite left on the bridge, which causes a huge explosion, sending Rick into a river. A fan on The Walking Dead Reddit community shared a post questing whether a bullet would produce enough spark to set off an explosion:

Does dynamite really explode if you shoot it? from thewalkingdead

The answer to u/2BitTheif’s question might be found in a Slate article from 2005. It seems the explosion Rick caused is plausible, but it all depends on some specifics:

“It depends on the explosive. Some bomb materials are highly sensitive to impact; if you shoot a gun at a stick of dynamite, for example, there’s a good chance you’ll set it off. Others are less susceptible to gunfire. The military tries to make its explosives as durable as it can, since you don’t want soldiers blowing up from the impact of a single bullet. A block of C4 plastic explosive can withstand a rifle shot without exploding. You can even set one on fire without too much worry.”

Last season brought the culmination of “All Out War,” which pitted Rick Grimes and his group of survivors against the Saviors and their cunning leader, Negan. With Negan’s life in his hands, Rick had a character-defining choice in front of him. By making the unilateral decision to spare Negan, Rick upheld the values his late son, Carl, championed in order to build for the future, but created conflict within his group.

Now, we see our survivors a year and a half after the end of the war, rebuilding civilization under Rick’s steadfast leadership. It is a time of relative peace among the communities as they work together, looking to the past to forge the future, but the world they knew is rapidly changing as man-made structures continue to degrade, and nature takes over, changing the landscape and creating new challenges for our survivors.

As time passes, the communities confront unexpected obstacles, danger, and of course, walkers, but nothing quite prepares them for the formidable force they are about to encounter, which threatens the very idea of civilization that our survivors have worked so hard to build.

The Walking Dead stars Norman Reedus, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride, Alanna Masterson, Josh McDermitt, Christian Serratos, Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Austin Amelio, Khary Payton, Katelyn Nacon, Pollyanna McIntosh, Callan McAuliffe, Avi Nash, and Samantha Morton as Alpha.

The Walking Dead Season 9 returns February 10, 2019 on AMC.
