While Thor: Love and Thunder will introduce Jane Foster as Mighty Thor, Taika Waititi has confirmed that Chris Hemsworth’s Thor Odinson has a huge part to play in the story.
While talking to MTV News at the Toronto International Film Festival, Taika Waititi was pretty quiet about anything on Thor: Love and Thunder, joking that he was on about page seven of writing the script. However, he did make one thing clear: Chris Hemsworth is playing the main character.
To clarify who the lead was between Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, Taika Waititi explained who the lead character was pretty clearly between the two actors:
“It’s [Chris Hemsworth]. It’s a Thor film. He is Thor, it’s a Thor film. She’s in it.”
So there you have it. Chris Hemsworth continues to lead the franchise, even though he’s not going to be the only character that will be called Thor anymore. You can see the clip below:

As it stands, the introduction of Jane Foster as the second character to use the Thor alias is still a pretty big deal. Natalie Portman was reportedly very unhappy that director Patty Jenkins was dismissed from Thor: The Dark World, and she did not return to Thor: Ragnarok in spite of the previous two films setting up her romance with Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder as a major plot point. When Taika Waititi read Jason Aaron’s run on Thor, he thought that bringing Jane Foster’s turn as a superhero would be something worth pursuing on the big screen, and pitched her the role… Which she said yes to. So it’s safe to imagine that Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster and Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie will both have substantial parts to play in the Chris Hemsworth-led movie.
Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder stars Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, and Natalie Portman. The film will be based on Jason Aaron’s Mighty Thor comic book run, with Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster set to become the new Thor.
Thor: Love and Thunder opens in theaters on November 5, 2021. Stay tuned for the latest news on Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and the future of the MCU!
