Could the Void have looked completely different in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Brand new concept art for Thunderbolts gives fans insight into what the design could have looked like.
Heading into Thunderbolts, many fans were worried about how the Void was going to be portrayed. Sentry alone is leagues upon leagues stronger than any character in the MCU’s current ranks, let alone the B-tier soccer team he faced in the film. However, the creative team behind the film managed to adapt the Void in an incredibly unique way, with a design that screamed with thematic and narrative cohesion.
Yet the simple shadow design wasn’t always what the Void was going to look like in Thunderbolts. Senior Marvel Studios illustrator John Staub recently shared a batch of concept art for the MCU’s latest villain online. The images highlight three very different designs, one of which may be familiar to fans of recent Spider-Man comics.
Was The Void Inspired By Knull?
Is it uncanny how close the concept art of the Void with red energy crackling along his chest looks to Knull? Yes. Is it likely that his design was inspired by the Spider-Man villain? Likely not, especially as the “spider legs” on his chest seem to trace the arc of his ribs. However, if it were, there certainly would have been some interesting conversations about where Thunderbolts sits in the wider MCU.
As for the other two design drafts, they’re not dissimilar to what Thunderbolts ultimately went with. That being said, the simple lack of anything in the MCU’s design of the Void is what makes the character stand out in the minds of so many people. So while this concept art is certainly interesting, it’s likely that Marvel made the right choice!
