Tilda Swinton On How Reshoots Changed Her ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Cameo

Doctor Strange The Ancient One Tilda Swinton

In a recent interview, Tilda Swinton revealed that she had to reshoot her Avengers: Endgame cameo due to plot changes.

Avengers: Endgame was filled with surprise cameos. Marvel Studios and the Russo Brothers were able to get back actors who many fans previously thought were just playing one-off characters. One such character was The Ancient One, played by Tilda Swinton in the 2016 Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Doctor Strange.

In a recent interview with IndieWire, Tilda Swinton was asked about her surprise cameo in Endgame. The actress had some interesting words to say about the experience.

“It was a surprise to me, too, And it was a pleasure. But what was a real surprise was, we shot it one summer day, and then over a year later, I went back to reshoot it because a couple of lines had been changed, a couple of plot points had been changed. And there was a tweaking of my costume.”

Swinton went on to reveal which plot points were changed, explaining that the dialogue about the Time Stone affecting the timeline was rewritten.

“The information that the Ancient One holds about the nature of the [Infinity] Stones, that they have to be put back, because otherwise.”

The plot point that was seemingly changed was how the Time Stone being absent from the timeline created branching realities that could create terrible outcomes. When asked about her time on Avengers: Endgame, Swinton had the following to say:

“That was amazing, and a whole other world of filmmaking, but, boy, was it worth it. They tweaked it into something extraordinary.”

Overall, it seems Tilda Swinton is pleased with the final product and sees the film as a great experience. Swinton’s work as the Ancient One is a big departure from the other roles that fill her filmography, but it appears that the actress enjoyed playing the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Currently, there is no word on if Tilda Swinton will ever reprise her role as The Ancient One. However, considering The Ancient One died in Doctor Strange and was brought back for Avengers: Endgame, it isn’t necessarily out of the realm of possibility for her character to make future appearances in the MCU. A Doctor Strange sequel is in development with original director Scott Derrickson returning to the director’s chair.
