Tina Fey opened up about why her character in Disney and Pixar’s Soul, called 22, is relatable to audiences around the world.
With Soul heading to Disney Plus later this month Tina Fey revealed how her character, 22, is so relatable for audiences young and old. Soul director Pete Docter also noted that even though Tina Fey’s character has had a number of historical figures as mentors, but she still doesn’t want to leave the comfort of her ethereal home. Producer Dana Murray teased a little of what makes 22 tick, explaining that when she sees all the other Souls heading to Earth she’s scared of the uncertainty. Murray also explained that while 22 hides her worries with a cynical exterior, she really feels like she’s broken.
“Seeing all the other souls leaving her for Earth, I think deep down she thinks she’s broken. She tries to be cynical and make fun of it, but she’s scared.”
But according to Soul star Tina Fey, 22 is just scared of life itself which makes her even more relatable. And in a year as unpredictable and scary as 2020, it’s easy to see how 22’s story will resonate with audiences. As the actor herself notes “Everyone has those moments of ‘It’s too much!’” But given Tina Fey’s hilarious comedy career, there’ll likely be some hilarious moments along the way to lighten the mood. Take a look at the Soul star discussing her role below.
“I think the ways in which she’s cynical and the things that she’s scared of are really relatable. Life is scary at times, and life hurts. Everyone has those moments of ‘It’s too much!’”
