Disney announced Pixar’s Soul will now be following the live-action Mulan remake and bypassing theaters for a Disney Plus release on Christmas Day.

In August, Disney made the move to release the live-action Mulan remake on Disney Plus instead of hitting domestic theaters for $29.99. Many speculated that Black Widow might follow since it was due in November, but the Marvel Studios film was recently pushed back to May of next year. Disney also made Pixar’s Onward available on the streaming service early after theaters across the country closed down due to COVID-19 earlier this year. Now Pixar’s Soul will become the next film to become an exclusive for Disney Plus.

Pixar’s Soul was originally slated for a November 20 release, but now the animated film will hit Disney Plus on December 25. Soul will still arrive in theaters where Disney Plus isn’t available yet. CEO Bob Chapek said the following in a statement regarding Soul‘s new release strategy:

“We are thrilled to share Pixar’s spectacular and moving Soul with audiences direct to Disney+ in December. A new original Pixar film is always a special occasion, and this truly heartwarming and humorous story about human connection and finding one’s place in the world will be a treat for families to enjoy together this holiday season.”

Here is the synopsis for Disney and Pixar’s Soul:

What is it that makes you…YOU? This November, Pixar Animation Studios’ all-new feature film “Soul” introduces Joe Gardner (voice of Jamie Foxx) – a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22 (voice of Tina Fey), who has never understood the appeal of the human experience. As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what’s great about living, he may just discover the answers to some of life’s most important questions.

Directed by Peter Doctor and Kemp Powers, Soul stars Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Questlove, Phylicia Rashad, Daveed Diggs, and Angela Bassett.

Soul will be released December 25 on Disney Plus. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for all the latest news surrounding Disney’s upcoming slate and be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for exclusive video content.
