‘Titans’ Crew Member Killed After Stunt Goes Horribly Wrong

Tragedy has struck the set of Titans as a crew member has been killed after a stunt that went horribly wrong.

Details for the accident are scarce but the stunt in question was reportedly a test for the upcoming second season of the DC Universe series. According to TMZ, a car was supposed to crash on its side. Apparently, a piece that was attached to the car flew off, striking special effects coordinator Warren Appleby in the head. He sadly died en route to the hospital.

Production for Titans will be shut down for two days and the Ministry of Labor in Canada is now investigating the incident. The show’s executive producers, DC Universe and Warner Bros. Television Group said the following in a joint statement made to TheWrap.

“We are heartbroken and devastated by the passing of our treasured colleague, special effects coordinator Warren Appleby, after an accident which occurred at a special effects facility during the preparation and testing for an upcoming shoot. Warren is beloved by all who worked with him during an impressive 25-year career in television and motion pictures. The executive producers, along with everyone in the TITANS family, Warner Bros. Television Group and DC UNIVERSE, wish to express our deepest condolences, and heartfelt love and support, to Warren’s family and friends at this most difficult time.”

Titans follows a grown-up Dick Grayson working as a Detective in Detroit, having left his nights with the Caped Crusader long in the past due to having fundamental differences with Batman’s methods and approach to crimefighting before becoming the leader of the heroes known as the Titans.

Here’s the official synopsis for the series:

Titans follows young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find belonging in a gritty take on the classic Teen Titans franchise. Dick Grayson and Rachel Roth, a special young girl possessed by a strange darkness, get embroiled in a conspiracy that could bring Hell on Earth. Joining them along the way are the hot-headed Starfire and loveable Beast Boy. Together they become a surrogate family and team of heroes.

Titans stars Brenton Thwaites as Richard “Dick” Grayson / Robin, Anna Diop as Koriand’r / Starfire, Teagan Croft as Rachel Roth / Raven, and Ryan Potter as Garfield “Gar” Logan / Beast Boy. The series is also making a few additions for its sophomore outing, with Joshua Orpin and Esai Morales playing Superboy and Deathstroke, respectively, while Chella Man and Chelsea Zhang have also joined Titans as Deathstroke’s children. Natalie Gumede has signed on to play Mercy Graves and Game of Thrones star Iain Glen is on board as Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. Batman.

Titans is now available exclusively on DC Universe in the U.S. and on Netflix internationally.
