Is Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 back on the table?

Tobey Maguire reportedly didn’t want to share too many details about what happened to his Peter Parker after Spider-Man 3 in No Way Home.

In Spider-Man: No Way Home, we witnessed the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Because it’s been some time since we last saw them on the big screen, we learned that Garfield’s Spider-Man stopped pulling his punches after Gwen Stacy’s death.

Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker only hinted that he was still with Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane. According to writer Chris McKenna, Maguire didn’t want to share too much about what happened to his Spider-Man after the third Sam Raimi film when developing No Way Home with McKenna and Erik Sommers. McKenna elaborated to The Hollywood Reporter about bringing the two Peters back for the film:

“Tobey wanted to be very minimal about how much you know. Very, very minimal. Andrew really loved the idea of he’s still tortured over what happened in Amazing Spider-Man 2 and where that left him, and how they could bring that to Tom. “We can empathize with you. We do know what you are going through. If anyone in the world knows what you’re going through, it’s us.” But also, “We can be beacons.” Tobey especially has come through that darkness. We thought it was cool that Andrew’s Peter was still in the midst of that darkness. They weren’t just here to go, “Two awesome Jedi knight heroes who show up and are going to help you take down the bad guys.” They are going through their own things. We were trying to write up to the characters that they did such a great job of creating and really being true to those characters and those stories and those worlds so that it didn’t feel like we were doing curtain call, fan-service.”

This tidbit instantly leads to speculation that Tobey Maguire might be looking to suit up as Spider-Man once again in a potential sequel to the Sam Raimi films. On the other hand, Maguire may just be looking to keep details a secret so fans can imagine their own story.

Here is the synopsis for Spider-Man No Way Home:

“For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.”

Directed by Jon Watts from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Martin Starr, J.B. Smoove, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Benedict Wong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, and Jamie Foxx, with Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire.
