Did Joker: Folie à Deux secretly reveal the origin of Two-Face? Todd Phillips explains Harvey Dent’s transformation over the course of the film.
One of the most shocking moments in Joker: Folie à Deux was when the car bomb went off right outside of the court house. To many, it was a tipping point for the film going from boring to downright incomprehensible. However, to Todd Phillips, it seems that moment was meant to act as a fulcrum in turning Harvey Dent into the iconic villain Two-Face.
“Yes, of course,” Phillips explained to EW. “[We’re] trying to put a realistic answer to why certain things happen. Why does he have [that face]? [He’s] playing the character before that character, he’s the young D.A. All we’re doing is saying, let’s use this lore as a foundation, but run it through a realistic lens, or at least a different lens than it’s been run through in other things, to make it our own.”
This is certainly an interesting revelation, especially given Todd Phillips himself had previously stated that Harvey Dent would NOT turn into Two-Face during the events of Joker: Folie à Deux. While that’s technically still true, it’s yet another in a long list of decisions that made the sequel not exactly sit right with fans and critics alike. So even though Phillips technically gave fans what they wanted, it’s clear it’s far from what they would pay to see.
Joker: Folie à Deux Bombs At The Box Office
The car wasn’t the only bomb Harvey Dent had to contend with this weekend. Much like Two-Face, Todd Phillips had to face the ugly side of the coin with Joker: Folie à Deux. The film was a massive flop at the box office, massive underperforming with only a $40 million domestic opening weekend, for a total of $120 million at the international box office.
While these numbers would be impressive for any other film, they pale in comparison to what Joker: Folie à Deux would need to make to break even. Todd Phillips spent a whopping $200 million on the project, with additional costs adding up to a staggering $450 million hurdle for the project to even make a profit. And given the opening weekend numbers are similar to that of Morbius, it’s not likely to cross that threshold anytime soon.
