During an interview with Fandango, Spider-Man franchise producer Amy Pascal confirmed Tom Hardy’s return for Sony’s Venom 2.
Sony’s Venom may have fared poorly with critics, but the box office success of the Spider-Man anti-hero’s solo film was another story. Grossing $855 million worldwide, a sequel was practically guaranteed and producer Amy Pascal has confirmed Venom 2 is in development with Tom Hardy set to reprise his role as Eddie Brock:
“I can say that Tom Hardy will be back, magnificently playing that character as no one else can.”
On what led to the box office success of Venom, Amy Pascal credited Tom Hardy’s performance as one of the key reasons the Spider-Man spin-off proved to be a financial hit:
“It’s a couple of things. One of them is that Sony did a great job creating that franchise and giving it a life and giving it its own world. Then there’s Tom Hardy. When you think of Venom, you’ll never be able to think of anyone but Tom Hardy sitting in that bathtub of lobsters. And once you saw Tom Hardy do this character, that’s all you needed to know.”
Kelly Marcel will pen the script for Venom 2 with Tom Hardy’s co-stars expected to include returning actors Michelle Williams and Woody Harrelson. It is widely believed Sony intends to release Tom Hardy’s Venom 2 on October 2, 2020, a date the studio is currently holding for an untitled Marvel project.
Venom follows Eddie Brock as he attempts to revive his journalism career by investigating the Life Foundation only to come into contact with an alien symbiote that bonds with him, granting him powers and transforming him into the titular anti-hero. It’s the second iteration of Venom seen on the big screen as Topher Grace played the character in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3.
