‘Avengers’ Director Calls Tom Holland’s ‘Cherry’ Performance “Oscar Worthy”

Tom Holland Avengers Cherry

Avengers director Joe Russo provided an update on Cherry and praised Tom Holland’s performance in the film.

After the epic achievement of the final two Avengers installments, the Russo Brothers are following it up with a more personal film. Cherry is based on a 2018 novel that tells the story of an Army medic who returns home with PTSD  and falls to an opioids addition. To pay for the addiction, the Army medic starts to rob from banks. Tom Holland is set to play the Army medic Nico Walker and will be joined by Ciara Bravo, Bill Skarsgård, and Jack Reynor.

Filming on Cherry recently wrapped at the beginning of the year with no release attached to the film and Netflix reportedly in talks to distribute. Joe Russo provided an update on Cherry amidst the coronavirus pandemic while talking to ComicBook.com:

“We were in post. We’ve been editing remotely with our editor. We’re just about the locked picture on it and start music and sound on it so it’ll be ready in a few months. The question is, what’s the market going to be? Where we are going to be? When are movie theaters going to reopen? There’s a lot of questions before.”

Of course, Tom Holland became a household name after starring in the Russo Brothers’ Captain America: Civil War as Spider-Man. Russo went on to say that Holland’s performance in Cherry is so good that it should get Oscar recognition:

“I think it’s an Oscar worthy performance. I think he is absolutely amazing. It is a gut wrenching performance. What he does to himself emotionally and physically is unbelievable. We have a seen an actor in a role like this in a long time. It stands the, you know, the movie stands a decade and this is an epic performance, but that certainly I think we’ll be in the Oscar conversation.”
