Is Spider-Man: Brand New Day going to be the internet’s perfect movie? Tom Holland reveals how online discourse impacted the upcoming film.
Leading up to the reveal of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the internet was awash with discourse about whether or not Tom Holland was a “good” Spider-Man. Much of this stems from No Way Home feeling like a drawn-out origin story for the wall-crawler, which then led many to look back across the hero’s MCU catalog to judge how in character he truly was.
Perhaps the biggest critique of the character leading up to Spider-Man: Brand New Day was that it didn’t feel “street level”. While Homecoming seemed to have the perfect blend of MCU connectivity and a “Friendly neighborhood” Spider-Man, each subsequent film ratcheted the stakes up more and more, leaving many craving a grounded adventure in the MCU starring Tom Holland.
Tom Holland’s Goals For Spider-Man
And it seems as though, for once, complaining on the internet actually did something! Tom Holland revealed in a recent interview with Esquire that he scoured the internet for comments about his performance leading up to the pitch meeting for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. And it seems as though he actually presented the hopes from those comments to Marvel!
“I did a lot of sneaky research online—looking at what people were saying in the interim between Spider-Man: No Way Home and now Spider-Man: Brand New Day. I really just kind of put together a vibe of what people were looking for and went to Marvel and said, ‘This is what I think we should be doing.’ And I think that’s exactly what we are doing.”
“So, it’s been a really fun process developing the movie. It’s the first time I’ve ever been allowed in that part of the process, and it’s definitely a stressful experience. But I think where we’ve got to, now that we’re shooting, we are shooting absolute gold.”
While Tom Holland didn’t specify exactly which comments online he presented to Marvel, all signs point to Spider-Man: Brand New Day having a much more grounded story when compared to prior installments. So as shocking as it seems, this film may be put on the board next to the Snyder Cut on the Mount Rushmore of internet accomplishments.
