Tom Holland will return as Spider-Man for another MCU project.
Spider-Man: No Way Home not only bursts open the gates for the multiverse but also serves as the conclusion to Tom Holland’s Spidey trilogy. As production on the threequel wrapped up, it was left uncertain what the future of the web crawler would look like in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While veteran Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal has confirmed that Tom Holland would be staying on as the character for future projects, it’s unclear what exactly that entails.
Contractually, Tom Holland is slated to appear in another MCU project as Spider-Man – we just don’t know what that will look like. Speaking with Comicbook.com, Sony Pictures Tom Rothman discussed the contractual obligations the studio holds with Marvel Studios and how Holland is set to return as Spidey one more time.
“It’s reciprocal. So, we lend one, and they lend one, and that’s how [Benedict Cumberbatch] is in this movie. So, we have one more ‘lend-back’ that’s committed. But the thing that I can say […] is that the two companies have a terrific working relationship. And I think it’s a mutual hope that that would continue. But there really isn’t anything definitive at this moment, because the truth of the matter is, we gotta ride [No Way Home] and see what happens.”
While it is expected that Tom Holland will return for another trilogy, nothing has officially been confirmed. As for what Spidey’s next appearance will be? One can imagine a cameo in any number of upcoming MCU films, including the Doctor Strange sequel which hits cinemas later next year.
Here is the synopsis for the upcoming film:
“For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.”
Directed by Jon Watts from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Martin Starr, J.B. Smoove, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Benedict Wong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, and Jamie Foxx, with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield heavily rumored to appear.
