Tom Holland says the search to find Uncharted director Ruben Fleischer was “stressful”.
Sony Pictures has been actively trying to develop an Uncharted film for over a decade. Based on the hit video game franchise of the same name, Uncharted is finally set to hit cinemas after an arduous journey. The film has faced a revolving door of directors and writers, each of who brought their own unique and distinctive taste to the franchise. Production on the adaptation failed to manifest until Spider-Man star Tom Holland was brought on board to star as treasure hunter Nathan Drake.
With Tom Holland on board as the adventure film’s leading man, production began to ramp up, with directorial duties eventually being handed off to Venom helmer Ruben Fleischer. With the film finally set to release later next month, one can’t help but look back on the long, toiling road it has taken to adapt the video game franchise for the big screen.
In a chat with Total Film magazine, Tom Holland opened up about the journey to find a director and how it was a stressful experience.
“Some of [the directors] came in, and had ideas that we didn’t like, that just didn’t fit the characters, and we had to move on to other people. We took inspiration from everyone. There were very different variations of Drake, and very different variations of Sully. Some people preferred to make the game, some people wanted to make it completely different to the game. It was an interesting process – one that I wouldn’t like to be in again. It’s quite stressful looking for a director.”
Director Ruben Fleischer then told Total Film that he joined the PlayStation production because of his positive relationship with Sony. Over the years Fleischer has worked with the studio on the Zombieland franchise and Venom, one of the company’s biggest earners.
“I was firing on all cylinders from a production standpoint. I was just really in the rhythm of making movies.”
Here is the synopsis for Uncharted:
“Uncharted introduces audiences to street-smart Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) and showcases his first treasure-hunting adventure with wisecracking partner Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg). Inspired by the acclaimed video game series, this action-adventure epic spans the globe and follows Nate and Sully as they embark on the dangerous pursuit of ‘the greatest treasure never found’ while also tracking clues that may lead to Nate’s long-lost brother.”
Directed by Reuben Fleischer from a script written by Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Rafe Judkins, Uncharted is being produced by Sony PlayStation Productions, with Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan producing alongside Charles Roven, Avi Arad, Alex Gartner, and Ari Arad.
Uncharted will be released in theaters on February 18th, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news on Sony’s Uncharted adaptation and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more video content!
