‘Tron: Legacy’ Director Says Disney Is Still Interested In A Sequel

Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski says there continues to be an interest over at Disney to do a sequel to the 2010 film.

Before Disney acquired Marvel and Lucasfilm, they were hoping for Tron to blow up as a tentpole franchise. While Tron: Legacy received mixed reviews, it did well enough at the box office and has since earned a cult following like the first film. In recent years, there was also a beloved Tron animated series as well, which was eventually canceled after one season.

A sequel to Tron: Legacy was green-lit, but Disney later abandoned the project before filming began. Since then, there have been reports that Jared Leto was in talks to star in a reboot, but there has been no news on that project since. It was also recently revealed that a Tron series for Disney Plus was also in the works before that was canceled as well. Director Joseph Kosinski has gone on to helm films like Oblivion and Top Gun: Maverick, but he revealed in an interview with Comicbook.com that Disney is still interested in a Tron: Legacy sequel:

“There’s always been an interest since Legacy [for a sequel]. There’s always been talk and murmuring of doing another and continuing the story. I was in China a few years ago and saw them building the TRON ride in Shanghai, which, apparently, is pretty amazing, I would love to experience that at some point. I think it’s still a nice jewel in the crown of Disney IP and I think there are fans and people petitioning and pushing to continue it inside the halls of Disney. So I think it could happen. Like anything, it just needs the right confluence of … it’s all about timing and the right elements and everything’s got to come together for a movie to happen. I think it’s possible and I think it’s worthy of it. I think there’s enough ideas in the franchise, and the fact that it is so unique and nothing else looks or sounds like it, that TRON story. There is, I think, a future for the franchise and I hope they keep making them.”
