Universal Pictures’ upcoming Dracula film, Renfield starring Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult has officially started production.
For several years now, Universal Pictures has attempted to revive its classic monsters in various ways, shapes and forms. The most recent and most notable was its attempt to copy the formula of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with its own Dark Universe franchise. The first installment of this was The Mummy which bombed at the box office and was savaged by critics. Since then the studio has opted to go another route with its classic Monsters which has, thus far, created one successful film in The Invisible Man but still has several other projects in development.
Back in 2019, it was revealed that a new Dracula film, told from the point of view of the titular character’s henchman, Renfield, was in development. Eventually, Nicholas Hoult was cast in the titular role with Nicholas Cage starring as the iconic vampire. In a recent post, the studio revealed that production on the film had officially begun. The film is said to be a horror-comedy that centers on Renfield who has been in service to Dracula for centuries and has grown tired of being his lackey. He finds a new lease on life when he falls for a traffic cop by the name of Rebecca Quincy. The movie is set to be directed by Chris McKay and is based on a pitch from The Walking Dead writer Robert Kirkman. The two are producing the film alongside David Alpert, Bryan Furst, and Sean Furst with the script written by Ryan Ridley. Renfield stars Nicholas Hoult as the titular character, Nicolas Cage as Dracula, Awkwafina as Rebecca Quincy, Adrian Martinez, and Ben Schwartz. The film currently does not have a release date.
