The first two Venom films made the interesting choice to set themselves in San Francisco, likely to set the films apart from the Spider-Man projects they’re so closely connected to. New set photos from Venom 3 tease that the film may take place even further way from Spider-Man’s base of operations.
Venom 3 is currently shooting in Cartagena, a city in Colombia, which means it’s likely fans will be getting plenty of set photos from locals. The first batch of these photos has dropped on Twitter, showcasing grafitti about Día de los Muertos, a.k.a. the Day of the Dead. While the holiday is celebrated all over Latin America, it’s most known to be celebrated in Mexico, which is where the leaker claims that the film will take place (at least in part).
Venom 3 being partially set in Mexico shouldn’t shock fans, as Let There Be Carnage ended with the duo traveling to South America to tour the world as a “Lethal Protector.” It’s unclear if the Day of the Dead will serve any narrative or thematic purpose in the film, or if the setting simply serves as a brief stop to point Eddie Brock back to San Francisco.
What to expect from the next Venom movie
Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Amy Pascal and Hutch Parker are producing Venom 3. The four were also involved with the first two Venom movies, which were directed by Ruben Fleischer and Andy Serkis. Kelly Marcel is making her directorial debut with the third installment.
Venom and its follow-up Venom: Let There Be Carnage earned a combined $1.36 billion at the worldwide box office. Following their release, Tom Hardy reprised his role as the anti-hero for the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home, setting up the long-awaited arrival of the Symbiote suit for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker.
